The Busy Buddy Dog Bone is a real “LIKE” by many of the Drs. Foster & Smith employee-owned dogs! It’s a treat holding nylon bone toy that is a real dog boredom-buster and it helps promote dental health. The bristle style bone features soft rubber nub rings, Gnawhide treats, plus stiff, tooth-cleaning nylon bristles to enhance the dental benefits of chewing.

The replaceable Gnawhide treat discs are apparently very tasty because they drive my dogs nuts. The discs last longer than most chew treats because they’re placed between a bristle layer and a knobby rubber layer. Little do the dogs know they’re brushing their own teeth while they’re madly working at getting that treat disc!

My dogs are at-attention as I unscrew the ends of the bones to put the treat discs in. When the bones go down, the dogs are fired-up and ready to do what they need to do to get that delicious reward! They much prefer to chew the toy with a treat disc in it, but occasionally they’ll pick up a treat less Busy Buddy Bone and chew on the hard nylon ends.

The Busy Buddy Bone is INCREDIBLY helpful with my new puppy. We got her at age 6-weeks so we’ve witnessed her crazy chewing needs. When she starts chewing something inappropriate, we distract her and redirect her attention to a chew toy, often the Busy Buddy Bone.

Features of the Busy Buddy Bone:

Conquer boredom and support pet dental health with these innovative dog toys

Bone-hard nylon ends, combined with multiple-texture add-ons, give dogs chewing variety

Replaceable treats reward dogs for their hard work

Available in various sizes to accommodate all size dogs

A fellow Drs. Foster & Smith colleague also tried the Busy Buddy Bristle Bone with her dogs. Here’s her review of the toy:

My dogs love the Busy Buddy Bone! My dogs have always loved the Nylabones, but always chewed them to destruction in a matter of just a few days. The replaceable rawhide rings give my dogs something else to chew on, so the nylabone portion lasts longer. The dogs love this toy so much, we have designated it a special occasion toy (which means it is not in their toy bin with all the other toys). It stays in the cupboard until the evening and they get to enjoy it after their supper. Otherwise, they would chew on it for hours and hours!

Canine leishmaniasis is a serious parasitic disease that can be fatal and is caused by the Leishmania parasite infection. The parasite is transmitted to dogs by infected insect bites about, sandflies, mosquitoes often misnamed.

Its symptoms include fever, hair loss (especially around the eyes), weight loss, skin ulcers and abnormal growth of nails. Dogs can also suffer from anemia, arthritis and renal dysfunction that can cause death. The expensive current treatments only help control the symptoms but not cure the disease, unfortunately.

It is estimated that there are 2.5 million infected dogs in southwest of Europe. The regions and countries of the Mediterranean basin represent a high risk to dogs and why they all should be vaccinated.

Currently, the disease is spreading from southern Europe to the north as a result of climate change and the increasing number of people traveling with their dogs.

During the winter and cold temperatures sandflies remain in a state of larvae and are harmless. Danger season begins with the heat, usually from May, and ends with the arrival of the cold.

Canine leishmaniasis is a real threat to all dog breeds, though some, like the Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Rottweilers and German Shepherd dogs are more likely than average to develop symptoms. Other breeds, like the Ibizan Hound, rarely develop clinical signs.

The risk of infection depends on exposure to infected sandflies bites. Despite the availability of repellent sprays, pipettes and collars, canine leishmaniasis is still a major threat in Europe. Some infected dogs can eliminate the infection and remain infected without developing symptoms. Dogs without symptoms can easily transmit the infection to other dogs.

The first vaccine against canine leishmaniasis Europe

In the context of the extremely variable nature of canine leishmaniasis, it is very important to minimize the number of animals with asymptomatic infection. These dogs which are not showing the disease, out of concern unless the owner is aware of it, but they are infectious to the sandfly and, therefore, they continue to contribute significantly to the spread of the disease. In these cases the animals are also at risk of progressing to a symptomatic stage more serious.

Company called “Virbac” after 20 years of research, launches the first and only vaccine in Europe that prevents canine leishmaniasis. The vaccine can be given to puppies starting from six months: the full vaccination program consists of three doses administered at intervals of three weeks and provides a prolonged internal defense against disease. Only need annual boosters to maintain protective immunity of the dog.

Leishmania can parasites on

Canine leishmaniasis is a disease caused by Leishmania parasites that can infect various vertebrate animals (e.g dogs) and humans. It is transmitted by the bite of a tiny insect (the sandfly or “sand flies”) infection, often incorrectly called “mosquito”. The dog is the main reservoir in Europe, but the infection can be transmitted between species. This is a serious veterinary problem and is also of concern to public health.

The young 20-pound beagle mix is being hailed as a miracle dog, given the name Daniel after the biblical figure who survived the lion’s den. Daniel surprised animal control officials after escaping death in a gas chamber.

Unnamed and unwanted, the young beagle mix was left anonymously in a drop box outside an Alabama pound. After no one claimed the stray dog at a shelter in Florence, Alabama, Daniel and 17 other unadopted pets were sent to the gas chamber. But after few minutes, Daniel was the only pet to miraculously survive, said animal control officer Vincent Grasso of Florence, Alabama.

“Maybe God just had a better plan for this one,”

The animal rescuer group Eleventh Hour Rescue told the Star-Ledger of Newark, who found a home for the puppy that has narrowly escaped death on 3 October, and was adopted by a family of New Jersey.

Reportedly between six and eight million animals are brought to shelters every year, and three to four million of them are euthanized in the gas chambers.

Lets hope that Daniel’s survival will raise awareness of the campaign to stop gassing unadopted pets. Many states have banned gas chambers for euthanizing pets, including Alabama. But that law won’t come into effect until next year…

Feline Hyperesthesia syndrome(feline psychogenic alopecia ) aggression manifests itself spontaneously. Cats with such syndrome are extremely sensitive when touched along the spine. To avoid this bad habit, it is very important that the cat is not stressed.

“Hyperesthesia” means “abnormally increased sensitivity of the skin.” It may begin with signs typical of feline psychogenic alopecia , and then escalate. It is known by many names including “rolling skin syndrome,” “twitchy cat disease,” “neuritis,” and “atypical neurodermatitis.”

Hyperesthesia syndrome occurs more frequently in oriental cats, breeds like Siamese, Himalayan, Burmese, and Abyssinian. This syndrome is most common between 1 to 4 y.o. cats. Hyperesthesia syndrome seems to have no known cause and aggression is called idiopathic.

Feline Hyperesthesia syndrome becomes apparent in few ways.

Twitching of the tail.

Rippling of the skin over the back

Muscle spasms and twitching

Cats may exhibit strange behaviors in response to touching such as tail chasing, biting at the tail, flank and sides, to the point of self-directed aggression. They run, jump, hallucinate, vocalize, and even turn around and hiss.

They may self-mutilate with extreme biting, licking, chewing, and plucking of the hair (sometimes called “barbering” or “fur mowing”). This behavior leads to hair loss and sometimes to severe skin lesions.

It is difficult to distract the cat from these behaviors once they begin. The sequence of events varies. Your cat might twitch first, then focus on that spot to lick and chew; or, he might be grooming, then start to twitch, then progress to other signs mentioned above. Behaviors that might mimic feline hyperesthesia syndrome are estrus (cats in heat), and certain types of seizure disorders. If you suspect your pet has feline hyperesthesia syndrome, you may go to the vet for neurological check. Sometimes anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medications, such as medications that increase serotonin (a brain chemical), may be helpful and will be prescribed by your veterinarian. These drugs are usually given for about twelve weeks, or until the symptoms decrease, then slowly tapered. Some cats may not be able to taper off the drugs and will require them indefinitely. Your veterinarian will monitor his condition with blood tests during this time period. Many of these drugs are not approved for this syndrome in cats, so your permission is required. Your veterinarian may also refer your cat to a behavior specialist for additional treatment of this unusual syndrome.

If you can identify and avoid stressors that can trigger hyperesthesia syndrome should be avoided. Some cats may be startled with excessive attention or a sudden unexpected noise, such as clapping or hitting a newspaper against a table.

The cats also may respond to medication for seizures or anxiety and antidepressants that act on the human brain cat to apply brakes behavior.

For Christmas, I sort of tricked my husband into getting a new puppy. I insisted that our 9-year-old dog, Allie, needed a pal. Shortly before the holiday, he said you never tell me what you want for Christmas. The lights started flashing in my head and I said, “I want another DOG!” What could he say, really?

The truth is, my husband and I had been talking about getting a new dog for the last couple of years. Our daughter turned five and we thought she was at about the right age to be able to respect and help care for a new member of the family. Believe me, this was not a spur of the moment decision! (See these tips for thinking through pet adoption before you adopt!)

We visited the local shelter with our daughter a few times. We all agreed to look for a medium-size adult female dog, but there weren’t any available. One of my visits to the shelter I saw a small, black, mixed-breed puppy in the corner cage. Her ears perked straight up when she saw me. I couldn’t leave without her.

Puppies are so cute and a lot of fun, but they also need training, attention, and our new puppy is very curious. We decided to name her Georgia. Her name should really be Curious Georgia, because she has to check out every little thing.

Tonight we have our first Puppy Obedience Class. I’m excited to get Georgia on the right path and hopefully, it will make our lives together much more rewarding. I’ll keep you updated on her progress.

Please do all the necessary checks to make sure they are genuine. i.e. get their landline telephone number and speak to them that way, and make sure you go and visit the pups or dog at their home.

Education and communication is the key to prevent this internet crime, so please read these warnings and do report ANY fishy or suspicious ad/reply on http://thepetspot.co.uk/contact-us IMMEDIATELY!

1) Replying to your ad
2) OR Posting an ad, to which you may reply

We also have a raft of security measures in place, details of which we do not wish to disclose publicly here as that would also alert the scammers to them…however we also rely on your help and vigilance by also reporting anything vaguely suspicious.

This is rare and no one to our knowledge has been successfully scammed via ThePetSpot.co.uk in the past two years. Prior to that two people were.. and we have progressively tightened security/increased warnings since then with great success. We cannot stop people being gullible and falling for online scams, but we can publish this information to help educate everyone.

Origin: Japan

Height: 23.79 – 27.69 inches (61.0 – 71.0 cm)

Weight: 74.8 – 110.0 pounds (34.0 – 50.0 kg)

Breed history: This breed was created in the XVII-th century for hunting bears in the Akita region in the North-East of Japan. These dogs are considered the national symbol of Japan. They had many uses: for fetching, for company, for security. It’s one of the seven breeds proclaimed monuments of nature in Japan.

Description: It is a big sized dog, strong, harmonious, brawny with an imposing look, witch gives the impression of a great distinction, due to a perfect symmetry. The body is rather long than tall, but just a bit, with a prominent and wide chest. The head is shapely with the body, flat between the ears, prominent stop, strong and square jaws. The eyes are small deep in the eye sockets and dark brown in colour. The ears are small, triangular, round ended and upped. The tail is medium in length, bushy and carried on the back or laterally in a curl. The fur is double with a first coating thick, short, fluffy and an exterior coatingr made of straight, harsh, short hair. The colours are various: red, white, tigerish, greyish, black with stripes.

Akita Inu ( Japanese Akita, Great Japanese Dog, Akita-ken )

Personality: It is an intelligent dog, proud, pretty brave, submissive, well-ballanced, impervious, with a strong hunter’s instinct, it doesn’t bark too much, sometimes independent and even towering. Very devoted to the master, it is protectiv with the children and accepts them if they don’t tease it. They are cautious and sceptic towards the strangers. They need to be socialized since an early age with other dogs and other animals from the household for not becoming dominant at maturity (especially towards dogs from the same gender).

Grooming: The fur of this dog requires a brushing more often during the moulting period to remove the dead hair bristles. In the rest of the time, a casual brushing is enough.

Living Conditions: It is a dog that can resist at bad weather and feels good outdoors next to an owner with experience in raising dogs. It needs fenced space for not going on a hunt when it smells the prey, of muzzle when it goes out on the street for not attacking other dogs (if it has’t been socialized enough).

Training: The training of this dog must be done by a person with experience, confident and the training must be firm, consequent, varied for not getting the dog bored. It is an intelligent dog and beautiful results can be get. It needs to be socialized since an eraly age with children, with people, with other dogs and other animals. It has a medium level of activity and it likes to take long walks.

Usefulness: This breed became very known with the touching story of an Akita dog, named Hachiko which used to led its master daily to the trainstation and back.
